Managing irrigation water
requires the identification of a
few different components in the
irrigation system. One of the
components is identifying what
type of soil you have so you
know how much water the soil
holds. This may change from
one field to another or it may
even change several times
within a field. So the question
remains, how is soil type
identified? To the right is a step
by step guide that is used to
help identify soil types. Once the
soil type is determined, the
water holding capacity can be
identified. The water holding
capacity tells us how much
water the soil holds. Applying
more water than what the soil
holds results in lost,
unrecoverable water that the
crop will not be able to use.
This information provides the
base necessary to establish a
sound irrigation scheduling
program.
The WCMP is available to assist with determining soil types, textures, water holding
capacities, and many other technical services to help you maximize your irrigation
efficiency.
