Know Your Flow

Know Your Flow

Everyone in the southwestern United States has some idea of the
water crisis revolving around Lake Mead and the Colorado River.
Here in Arizona, agriculture producers are really feeling the effects of
the situation and are left scrambling to do everything they can to
maximize their irrigation efficiencies and sustain their businesses.

If you are a grower who receives CAP water via an irrigation district,
you might be limited to a maximum flow rate delivery, and you may
experience fluctuating flow rates through out it. This makes it
extremely difficult to effectively manage your irrigation applications,
ultimately making you less efficient.

Monitoring flow rates is something everyone can do. There are
several methods, however, a portable weir is used by the WCMP
because of its portability, ease of use, and accuracy.]

The portable weir has been around for decades and has a proven
track record that matches the accuracy of most open concrete ditch
devices. The weir is patterned after a proven system used by Salt River Project and Roosevelt Water Conservation District. With a
few calculations, flow rates can be determined in miner’s inches, gallons per minute, and cubic feet per second. A flow rate
measuring device is a vital tool to achieving your maximum irrigation efficiency.

Today’s water crisis presents yet another set of new challenges for production agriculture. Monitoring flow rates helps growers know
exactly how their irrigation systems are performing and when adjustments need to be made to reach their potential. The WCMP is
available to assist you with measuring your flow rates as well as many other technical irrigation services you may need.
